It's not too early to think about making gifts for Christmas. I always wait too long and then have to run around like crazy trying to get it finished and spending money I had not planned on. I like making my own gifts and I think the people I make for appreciate it.
Fleece Scarfs
With one yard of fleece, you can make three scarfs. All three would be 12" wide. Buy the fleece in a print that will be easy to cut. Fleece comes 44 to 45" wide. If you cut side to side, your scarf will be 44 to 45" wide. If you cut three of the, they will be 12"....one yard of fabric is 36" long divided by 3 is 12". If you buy a stripe it will be easy for you to follow the lines to cut it evenly.
Cut the three pieces. Fringe the ends. If you sew, stitch a line 3 to 4" from the end, on each side. Cut up to the line in 1" increments, or 1/2 if you want thinner fringe. You can still cut fringe, even if you don't sew the line.
This is a good craft to make for teachers, bus drivers, people at work and your family. These are easy enough that with a little help, your children could make them for gift exchanges at school.
Girl scouts and boy scouts could make them in green or brown.
Rice Bag
These bags are filled with long cooking raw rice. You can add dried herbs or flowers, such a lavender, mint, rosemary, thyme, cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, ground dried orange or lemon peels, for fragrance. They can be put into the microwave for 3 minutes and the heat lasts for a good hour. My husband heats one up and takes it to his tractor when he plows snow. They can also be put into the freezer and be used as an ice bag.
Cut 2 pieces of heavy fabric 12" x 12". Put right sides together and sew around 3 sides. Turn right side out. The side not sewn is the top. Start at the bottom and sew one or two lines of stitching from the bottom to the top, dividing the bag into 2 or 3 parts. This just keeps the rice evenly proportioned.
Fill the bag halfway with rice and your dried herbs. Sew the top closed.
This is a great gift for grandparents, someone with backaches or anyone that works at a desk all day.
Hot Pads for the Table
Cut heavy fabric 8 x 8". With right sides together, sew around 3 sides. Turn right side out. Fill halfway with long cooking raw rice. Add 4 crushed cinnamon sticks, 1 T ground cinnamon and 2 T ground or crushed cloves. Sew the hot pad closed.
With very heavy thread, sew four spots in the pad. Mark 1 1/2 inches from each corner and sew a few stitches to secure and flatten the hot pad.
